Temporary Traffic Control in Highway Work Zones - Design and Supervision is a new two-day program that prepares work zone supervisors to interpret, adapt, and implement Traffic Control Plans. It focuses on specific job responsibilities and covers information in parts I, V, and VI of the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). You can trust the content. Temporary Traffic Control is based on the most current federal regulations, and reviewed by the leading industry experts. It's based on real-world situations. Experienced instructors lead students through problem-solving exercises, using the MUTCD and state guidelines. It's flexible. Controlling traffic through work areas is one of the most important -- and dangerous -- operations in construction maintenance. The National Safety Council's Flagger Training Course is a comprehensive skill-building session that meets federal industry guidelines: the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) guidelines and the ANSI standard ISEA-107-2015. The Office of Highway Safety, the Federal Highway Administration, and several state Departments of Transportation have reviewed this program. Training goal The primary objectives of the program are to train flaggers to provide safe passage of traffic through and around work areas and to minimize confusion by bringing standard flagging procedures to our nation's highways. About This Course:
Successful completion of this course results in participants becoming OSHA-authorized trainers in OSHA’s Outreach Training Program for the Construction Industry. Authorized trainers can conduct both 10-hour and 30-hour construction industry classes that provide training to workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces along with information regarding workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a workplace safety complaint. OSHA-authorized trainers are able to issue 10 and 30-hour course completion cards to participants.

During the course, students will work with a partner to develop a presentation and teach an assigned OSHA Construction Industry Outreach topic, and successfully pass a written exam. Participants will be provided with a variety of training materials and resources.

Prerequisites:
  • OSHA #510 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry (Please note, the 30-hour Construction OSHA outreach class is not considered equivalent to OSHA #510. Also, this course must have been completed in the last 7 years. If you completed the course longer than 7 years ago, then you will need to retake it in order to qualify.)
  • Five (5) years of construction industry safety experience
